It was "just" the gun that was used in 4 major wars, and the system that was copied and now appears in "almost every other pistol". It was also the solution to the "stopping power" issue, as smaller calibers didn't provide satisfactory results.

When the spring loaded slide racks forward, a new cartridge is stripped off the magazine and a small spring loaded tang inside the slide (the ejector) snaps over the rim of the cartridge (even though it's a rimless cartridge, there is a small rim, set flush to the body). On recoil, as the slide racks backward, that ejector pulls out the cartridge from the barrel - since it's only on one side (the side of the ejection port) the cartridge flys out the second the end clears.

@robwtsn106 Actually, neither. Look closely at the rounds, they are 'groove and rim' at the rear. Stop the video at 0:02 seconds. Look closely just to the left of the firing pin. This is the extractor. It has a 'hook' on the end. The casing's rim slides up into the extractor hook. When fired, the slide moves back, the extractor pulls the casing straight back out of the chamber. Not shown, is the ejector. The slide moves back, the casing hits the ejector and is flipped out the ejection port.

I'm assuming you have little experience with firearms. Watch, then stop the video at 0:04 seconds. Look very closely at the round. The (yellow) casing is a little larger than the (orange) bullet. The barrel is a thick tube drilled through for the bullet's diameter. The end where the bullet enters, the chamber, is drilled out just a little larger to fit the casing. The round is completely surrounded within the chamber and can't move at all.

when the bullet is fired the gases push the bullet and the casing equally ( newtons third law) and thus the casing is pushed into the slide moving it backward, ejecting the casing and on the forward stroke the next round is loaded. There's a spring on the slide that is specifically made so that the slide moves just far enough back that the next round is loaded, thus reducing the force on your hand...

Have you ever fired a colt 45 in action? It has a fucking huge recoil where even strong guys have trouble firing the gun with one hand. It isnt a shooting range where everything is controlled. If you dont buy extra beavertails for the .45, 99% of the people using it will mess up their hands which will be bruised which means you have less strength to fire after a few mags. I really wonder why people like the colt .45 so much. I'd prefer a Glock.

I haven't fired one, but it is a fact that the design is still popular after 100 years. Most new 1911s do have large beavertails, and it'd be pretty stupid to fire anything that isn't a .22 or .25 with one hand IMO. People like the 1911 for its classic, rugged looks and firepower, and 1911 guys don't trust always-cocked Glocks.

I think the hammer pushes that cylindrical thing in front of it which strikes the center of the shell (of the bullet) which I think is made of flint, creating sparks and igniting the powder in the shell which (due to pressure) pushes the bullet out. There. Either I explained it properly or I just described a flintlock. O.o

On the right side of the frame there is a claw that grabs the rim of the case. This is the extractor which pulls the case out of the chamber. On the left side of the frame there is the ejector which is a metal bar that the slide slides over. When the slide recoils back the side of the case hits the metal bar which flips it out the ejection port.

the shell ejector. the second bullet does not push the used casing out. if it did the slide would come back whilst the casing was exiting the slide since the casing would not be flinged out, therefore making the gun incredibly unreliable and it would sort of make it a single action handgun since each shot you fired you would have to pull the slide back again to eject the used shell and chamber another round.

Many semi automatic weapons use gas pressure "that is what is making the bullet go forward" to drive the slide back. The slide comes back and grabs another around with the help of the magazine spring. Quite simple.

ever seen a catridge being ignited NOT inside a gun? contrary to what you see in the movies, which is the bullet shoots forward, IRL, the catridge actually explodes, sending flying shrapnel of brass everywhere. the locking system you see there, is just to prevent that. It makes sure the brass case is seated securely inside the chamber until the gas pressure has reduced to a safe level, after which the gun cycles and the case can be ejected safely, without causing the said explosion.

Another important reason for the tilting barrel design employed by Browning, was to delay the opening of the breach thereby giving enough time for the pressures in the chamber to subside before the slide brings out the thin brass casing. Opening the breach too early and the brass casing would easily rupture and thusly damage the gun by means of expelled gases. For an example of a ruptured casing, type "glock kb" in a google image search; high pressure reloads are bad for most pistols

its called the browning cam system. the reason why it moves is because the breach is locked to the frame. its locked to the frame in order for the gun to shoot powerful loads pretty much every pistol does this. if it didnt lock the slide would have enough force to eventualy break off the slide and hit the shooter in the face (this happend with the early Beretta 92F's in the military) well anyway it comes back with the recoil in order to unlock the breach and eject the spent casing. that explain?

What I want to know is why the barrel was designed to move with the recoil instead of attaching it firmly to the frame to increase accuracy, like most rifles. I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable answer, I wouldn't want to insinuate that I know more about firearms than John Browning. There's a reason this design has been copied on almost every short recoil automatic around today, I would like to know that reason.
