so... chicks dig infinity?
anonymousbl00dlust
I'm really surprised no one brought up the strong anthropic principle in response to the question at 5:20
ricktbdgc
you know it has to have a bit more energy than a pen laser, probably enough to burn a hole through instantly
Theelepeltjel
So is this just coincidence or do most women like infinity? 'Cause that could lead to some great pickup lines
JustAWanderingBard
Science is so fucking cool.
supermanondrugs1
If I put my hand in the hydron collider, sped it up to near the speed of light and punched Justin Beiber, would his face turn into a black hole?

@lemsterterror1 lol it was funny
FunnyVideoCollector
When a bullet hits flesh it makes a small hole but also the energy from the bullet spreads killing flesh around the hole all the way through.
ijunkie
There already was a particle accelerator accident like this. A physicist put his head directly into the path of a particle beam without a vacuum inside and got a severe radiation burn.
spaula
Putting your hand in the LHC, I'm pretty much very sure, would cause a radiation burn on your hand. How bad? Would it be deadly bad? Well that's another question. But surely that would depend on how much the LHC was loaded and wound up.
HaileISela
it's so human to call a supernova one of the most catastrophic events in the universe. if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't exist. it's beautiful because the death of a star means not just destruction but also birth.
alecbg919
Very pedantic of me, but the fact that the title is sixtps sgmbphls is a bit annoying

@zythepsarian Yea the effects of stupidity are overwhelming coming from you as a result. Who knew if u stuck your penis in a Hardon Collider you would become a moron instantly.
zythepsarian
@jp221073 in order to insult someone in english, first you should try learning it, since what you said really didnt make any sense at all and made you look a whole hell of a lot stupider than my little comment is, lol

@zythepsarian yep thats where it belongs, with the other sub-atomic particles.jk lol

I hate it they answer the practical instead of the hypothetical
i.e. going off about Betelgeuse or how Alpha Centauri is not massive enough instead of just inventing a hypothetical star and answering the question, or talking about the fact that the LHC is hundreds of meters underground.
I know most of them end up actually answering the question, but its annoying to have to sit through 50 seconds of talking about Betelgeuse instead of getting an answer.

What is the kinetic energy of the beam in the LHC since it's being accelerated to almost relativistic speeds?
VirtRampage
god i hate it how when asked about the supernova scenario with "WHAT IF" they say, THAT WONT HAPPEN I WONT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ILL RATHER EXPLAIN WHY ALPHA CENTAURI WONT EXPLODE
danielvutran
@VirtRampage Wouldn't you be annoyed if your little sister asked you "What if pigs grow giant and turned into gold, would your parents still love each other?" Now times that by 100x being repeated by 1000000 little sisters.
1HumanKind
@VirtRampage
answer is simple.
If a star 4 light years away went supernova, and discharged a strong Gamma burst at the Earth, the outcome would be singular and certain for all complex life here. Our DNA don't like multiple fatal doses of radiation. It could even strip the atmosphere.
Happy?
fishybishbash
@1HumanKind lol steady Sheldon

haha, girls like infinity! I'm thinking about the fact that they like diamonds, which last very long... There must be a connection somehow :P
MrJasperdog
try sticking your head in there instead, put a black holr through your skull bone head.....lolol
frostyuk2007
What is the pressure inside the LHC? Just wondering because I thought it would be interesting to find out how particles behave in heavy gravity situations. If that makes any sense :-/
MrJonline
@frostyuk2007 there is (almost) no pressure, since there is a (almost)vacuum maintained in the tunnel.
Pressure and gravity are two different things, on earth we live in a pressure of 1 atmosphere and are subjected to the earths gravity
In the vacuum of space, gravity also plays a big role in keeping everything in place
The vacuum is created so the particles endure almost no resistance and can be accelerated to near light speed
Heavy gravity would probably bend the beam
frostyuk2007
@MrJonline By heavy gravity I really just mean extreme pressures and if it would change behaviours of molecules and how. In my mind (and probably only in my mind) gravity no matter how tiny the force is always significant, but then gravity is a bit of a mystery still. lights my imagination. :)

@BinaryEggRoll
You are a disgusting human being. I am ashamed to even call you a human being.
What the hell is wrong with you? Seriously!?
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll im not going to your stupid propaganda website. whats your profession then? if you think the arts are worthless then you clearly are as uneducated as you sound. go back to school moron.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll im a musician actually and my parents have never shown any interest in the sciences. not that that would change the fact that you are a complete loon. i bet you and your parents are fat christian uneducated gun toting redneck inbred swamp dwelling non-voting bible bashing racist gullible xenophobes.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll you've constructed such an elaborate conspiracy. the government and doctors working together to bring down a country using medicine, amazing. now im part of it too and i need to be neutralised? do you even read what you're typing? you could be arrested for conspiracy to murder in the right country haha.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll wow... you know nothing about doctors without borders. im amazed at how ignorant you are.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll "i am a scientist and researcher and apply the scientific method to every field" i doubt you would get through tertiary learning with amazing grammar like that. i guess all those Médecins Sans Frontières who leave their family to help people for no money at all are doing it for the money too? HOW DARE YOU accuse people of being selfish when they've given up their personal and finacial security just to help people they dont even know. absolutely ridiculous.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll you dont have to believe me, i did say to go talk to doctors and researchers because there are experts in fields like biology and chemistry that could tell you anything you might want to know about those subjects. instead of merely suggesting that modern medicine is making people sick, how about you go talk to some people that are able to walk because of stem cell therapy or go meet some people that were blind before an eye transplant.
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll i know someone personally that survived bowel cancer and someone that survived breast cancer and im sure other people i know have survived all kinds of diseases and ailments thanks to modern medicine and they arent spending the rest of their lives in hospital. theyre fine now. thanks to doctors not fucking morons like you that claim science is going to kill us all... READ A FUCKING BOOK!
Vermin298
@BinaryEggRoll ok first of all, pandora was given the box and when she opened it all the evil came out but she closed it in time to save hope. if people start claiming medicine is the cause of illness then i guess we should just close down the hospitals and stop funding cancer research which saves thousands of lives every year? maybe you should spend some time talking to doctors and researchers instead of conspiracy theorists. better yet, crack a fucking book.

Protons are sometimes used in Radio Therapy (google it) but at much lower energies. It probably would just make an ionized track thru your hand damaging DNA, but no recoil.
I'd be more concerned of the currents in the LHC-coils...
TKOConnor1
Wow. These guys are going to kill us all.
Vermin298
@TKOConnor1 these are the same people that brought you the internet and vaccines to diseases that are now almost extinct. scientists make cool stuff, scared irrational people like you turn it into a nuke.
Drag0nfoxx
Betelgeuse isn't the closest SN candidate, that's probably Sirius. It probably couldn't go type II, but it can go type Ia.

Draiga
My new favorite Youtube channel. (Thanks VSauce) and thanks for all the great videos. And light would only "fall behind" an object that is traveling faster than light. Because light can't go that fast... Faster than... itself. ~_~ Why is that such a hard question that all the answers are, "Duh... it's pointless to think about because it's impossible."
OtherVerse
@Draiga
Below is a list of topics to search for:
1) "Special relativity": why matter can never move at or beyond the speed of "light in a vacuum."
2) "Relativistic doppler shift": exactly what happens when light is emitted by fast things.
3) "Cerenkov radiation": when particles exceed the local speed of light in a non-vacuum.
4) "Tachyon condensation": it's never pointless to think about impossible things.
Physics is far, far deeper than the sort of arm-waving conjecturing shown in this video.
Mares8192
It's impossible to get to or faster then the speed of light because what nature does it slow down time, that is why it is impossible. And theoretically you can travel into the future if you were near the speed the light.
tj6362
Here's an easier one for you experts then!
Say I am flying through space faster than the speed of light in my BMW, then I turn my headlights on!
Would anything happen?
Aviatorsmith
@tj6362 You wouldn't be able to travel faster than the speed of light, so that question is invalid. If you were travelling very close to the speed of light however, you will still see your headlights turn on and the light travelling away from your car at the speed of light assuming you are the driver. Someone standing outside the car and not moving would see the light pooling up at the front of your car.

OK, mythbusters I have a job for you, ok? First thing really easy an hand, right? now a little bit more difficult but is possible the LHC ok? So LHC + hand = great television moment...
Next season maybe? Please?

Re Betelguese going supernova, remember that Betelgeuse is between 497 and 789 light years away from Earth. It may have gone supernova 200 years ago, but we won't know it 'til the energy/light actually gets here in another 290-to-600 years.
Cheer up.
Likewise, Andromeda's about 2.54 MILLION light years away. It could have VANISHED a million years ago, and we won't know for another 1.54 million years.
I'm not gonna wait around, sorry. Go back to your videogame.

AscuriousAsGeorge
When they where talking about the star that is 400 light years away that may go supernova, wouldn't it still take 400 years for this explosion to be visible to the naked eye, hence it taking 400 years for the light to travel from the star to earth?
ilvmusiclol
@AscuriousAsGeorge at least yes, not all the radiation would be travelling at the speed of light if any ;)
vishva8kumara
The total energy of the proton beam is quite small, but the energy is in heigh density, it will drill a hole through anything. A Russian scientist [Anatoli Bugorski] once accidently fallen in to a particle accelerator head-first, and the beam has gone through his head. He survived, but with left half of the face paralysed. He have said that he didn't feel anything at the time.

I think this is what they show you when you go into the Total Perspective Vortex.
sporkafife
But seeing as your hand is basically empty space (with atoms making up a very very very tiny volume), doesn't that mean that all or most of the protons in the LHC beam would travel straight through your hand and not interact at all?
rottencranberry
Most interesting video i've watch in utube for a while, and i mean a really long period of time (maybe since i found Cosmos by Dr. Sagan posted here).

@puesbueno In England it's spelled Favourite with a U. In America it's just favorite. No mistake.
Obama4Prezz
@puesbueno By the way, the entire English speaking/writing world, except for the US, spells words such as favourite, honour, colour, etc. Keep in mind that these words are not incorrect, nor are the American 'or' versions of these. Many countries such as Canada use both versions according to personal preference or setting. Remember, Google is your friend -- so look up the subject of spelling before you point to someone's 'mistake'.

The first Q (LHC+Hand) needs a better response.
Anatoli Bugorski was hit with a beam, through the head, and survived. Google it.
Some issues; Convulsions from the radiation, near absolute zero temperatures, the ultra high vacuum in the tubes and the beam protection system might dump the beam.
Hypothetically and all technicalities aside, If we passed our hand through the beam, I'd say it would be literally cut off. Worlds best, most expensive and largest laser cutter... Ouch!

Check out Anatoli Petrovich Burgorski, he stuck his head in a particle accelerator in 1978. There's a Wiki page for him.
OtherVerse
Hey there, 1isaacmusic,
Search the web for "hadron therapy". You'll see that energetic protons are aimed at people every day, in modern cancer treatments. Simulation software such as Geant4 can calculate the beam energies required to precisely target cancerous tissues near sensitive organs.
Look at some of the predefined materials in the Geant4 software:
ADIPOSE_TISSUE_ICRP
BONE_CORTICAL_ICRP
MUSCLE_STRIATED_ICRU
See? Some scientists simulate this stuff every day. Ignore the worthless video.
1isaacmusic
@OtherVerse Yes, but don't they differ in magnitude substantialy from colliders like LHC and CERN ? I watched my whole family die of cancer before I was 30, I've seen a fairly wide range of treatments, unfortunately none of them successful. It does not diminish my fascination for science for I understand the difference between terms like " harmful, poisonous, toxic, cargenogenic " etc. Thanks.
OtherVerse
@1isaacmusic
Truly sorry to hear about your family.
Modern "hadron therapy" can treat previously-untreatable cancers.
It's based on the fact that higher-energy protons are quite penetrating, while low-energy protons dump much energy in a small volume. So fine-tuned proton beams can target cancer inside a person's body -- almost like a ninja that sneaks through to its target.
You can paste these terms into Google, to see the underlying science:
pdg 2010 27. passage of particles through matter
Christopholaes
@OtherVerse Well yes, but there are energetic protons, and there are energetic protons if you know what i mean. The difference in mass density and energy distribution would be quite large. Being as it's the 'LARGE Hadron Collider' it's using massive amounts of energy, and spewing many of particles at a time. Completely different to what is being used in medicinal therapies today. Sorry, but this is somewhat obvious stuff. Would you equate the radiation in an x-ray, to that of a power plant?
Christopholaes
@OtherVerse OK, I will do that, and also reference a few other sources I know to be reliable and get back to you.
Yet, I still suspect the differences in magnitude of energies involved would spell disaster for human flesh. I'll even take a guess as to there being a completely different material being used, with different results. And that your assuming they are the same. But that's just a predictive guess. As I'm not a physicist, and wouldn't pretend to be. Are you?
OtherVerse
@Christopholaes
Yes, I conducted some of the original particle simulations for the design and running of the BaBar experiment.
The key point is: all people fail at predicting particle processes through "natural intuition." That's why simulation software is used to design particle detectors and even beam dump dimensions & materials.
Many different simulation software packages meet various needs. You can search for more info on the official "Geant4" site or "FLUKA" site, for example.

@OtherVerse
That's not the part that got me. The part that got me was the Atlas of Creation in the bookshelf one of them had. Now THAT is embarrasing!
therealelizacat
@OtherVerse Not at 7 TeV...
OtherVerse
@therealelizacat
I ran a software simulation of 7 TeV protons penetrating a hand, before I posted my comments.
The hand got a narrow channel of damage through the middle, but the whole-body radiation dose depended on the density of the materials downstream of the hand, as well as whether the body was upstream or downstream of the hand. Please know that physicists run simulations when designing particle detectors and beam dumps, before any parts are actually built. It's never guesswork.
livedandletdie
@OtherVerse nope no protons are fired at humans in cancer treatments they would just not be able to enter through our skin because they have a charge. but gamma rays and beta rays can enter our body even though beta rays only enters the skins before they stop. Gamma moves everywhere because they are photons in a sense. that have such high energy that they can not be seen. Positron decay in the body is used in cancer and it produces gamma rays so one can see cancer in the body. Called PETscan.
OtherVerse
@livedandletdie
Please type "hadron therapy" into Google right away. I guarantee that you'll be astounded.
AleximusMaximus
Chicks dig infinity.
Moratorium
@AleximusMaximus :) No they don't. Both said they don't. I am male and I like infinity more than everything. Infinity relates to death. If you could live forever, would you like it? I wouldn't. If there is a paradise after death, it will be boring if it is eternal. If there is a hell it will be boring, too. Anything eternal you have to experience is awful. And even if there was a soul, a flying character of a person, being in that state for eternity is awful, too. One thing is for certain ->
AleximusMaximus
@Moratorium Are you high? I made a facetious off-the-cuff joke and you wrote a paragraph of your musings on an eternal afterlife.
Besides. If you want to get serious, then you're off the mark anyway. Infinity does not mean eternity. Infinity is a mathematical concept, and can describe and relate to all sorts of things far more real and beautiful than any fictional afterlife.
Moratorium
@AleximusMaximus I don't have experiences with drugs you seem to have to a great extent.

Your hand would get eaten by a T-rex in a prehistoric parallel universe.
Obviously.
SoulmanZ
The hand vs LHC beam question is poorly answered. It is a biophysics question. The answer is you would get severe radiation burns. It would depend how long you hold your hand in there, but 7TeV times thousands of interactions is a huge amount of energy.
You put your hand in a CT scanner (xrays) for more than 30 seconds of normal scanning and you get burns (the deterministic threshold is exceeded). The beam at the LHC? Your proteins would be ripped to shreds. I doubt you would keep the hand.

First, great series of videos!!
I was wondering that you could make a video about solar magnetic pole changes, solar flares and all that stuff about 2012 burst that was underestimated. Just to mention, I'm not superticious, I'm just curious about it and, since I've seen Michio Kaku talking about that I wondered what are the real consequences about that.
Thanks!!

well, how about this: if you take a corpse, and put it in the collider, turn it on, and now what do you have. Could the collider be used in future medicine, ie; cancer
OtherVerse
Hey hross233,
Energetic proton beams are used every day (yes NOW, not in the future) for real-life cancer treatments.
No corpses. No. But you can look up "hadron therapy" or "proton therapy" to read more.
Simulation software such as Geant4 can calculate the interaction of particles with human tissues. A 'hadrontherapy' example is even included in the Geant4 install files. The fact that this video never addressed this just shows you that bad scientists flap their mouths without having a clue
quysweat
@hross233 the corpse will start walking and become what you would called a "zombie" lol
GarySpatzScam
I've a question that I think most people would be curious about... Not having to do with the beams of course, but the detectors themselves. If you were to create a detector, create a compartment in the center for a person to lay down in and let's say.. it's a person who is about to die.. Would the detectors be able to find the energy released from the body as they pass away? (perhaps the energy that exists in the brain, or even detect a soul?)
dylanlawless1
@GarySpatzScam I think you're forgetting that there's no such thing as a "soul" and there's no energy released, although its an amusing thought. I don't mean to be disrespectful of your beliefs but there's no magic spark that disappears when we die, its just biochemical functions.
izlude2
@GarySpatzScam excellent question mr gary. according to the latest studies at the SCE, a soul may indeed exist as an intelligent form of energy. i hate to burst mr dylaia's bubble, but saying you can't disprove a soul is just as good as saying you can't prove there is one. indeed, it must be a pitiful existence to think that one's self lives for no purpose.

did you just write that the soul may exist as an intelligent form of energy ... ???

Grr I hate people that do this! "What happens if I put my hand in the LHC?"
"You can't they'd yank you out before you could!!!"
It's a WHAT IF. Not 'would I be able to'
OtherVerse
Hey SuperCorey95,
The video didn't get it right, anyway.
I did a partial simulation using Geant4 software (for 7TeV, with a partial physics list).
Your hand gets a piercing by the 7TeV proton beam, but your whole-body radiation dose depends on the material downstream: if you're in front of a graphite beam dump (or concrete or etc.), your dose is enormously higher than if you're standing at the front of an air-filled space. They should've said, "what do you imagine you're standing in front of?"

Infinity! All the way. Ive considered the isea of universal constants being different before. It is a fascinating idea. What would life be like in a universe of altered constants? If gravity was weaker we could all effectively fly and ground bound creatures and technology might be the miracle. If the weak and strong nuclear forces were too weak would nuclei form? If not there may be no mass therefore no gravity. maybe nuclei could be formed by groups of positrons and electrons?

@rhetoricalparadox I once heard a long time ago that if all the continents were made of enriched uranium and all the oceans were heavy water then the earth could make a bomb large enough to form a black hole...not sure if it is true.
Radl0activE
@rhetoricalparadox if we had that much in the first place and if we are capable of making that much, nothing would happen to the rest of the universe anyways because Earth is nothing compared to it. secondly, there is no atmosphere to dissolve into if you do blow up the earth

Considering how quickly the proton bunches travel around the ring, I don't think that the mass of your hand could get out of the way fast enough to avoid the beam dumping a massive amount of energy into your hand. So... I predict an exploding hand-plasma fireball that you wouldn't survive.
