How would the moss (Tardigrade food) get onto the other planets?
rococo7777
SO. COOL.
I love it when science is cute (and involves Doctor Who), because then everyone gets interested and can learn something awesome like this. :)
MsReno56
I thought of a Honey Badger finding the question to life, the universe, and everything.
Xcolorized
who thinks he sounds kinda like charlieissocoollike?
mitikarim
@Xcolorized charliesocoolike + time + america = hank
DeiSkittles
that is kind of adorable X3
JuliaR2D2
Honey Badger vs. Tardigrade, who would win?
msDFTBAnerdfighter
they are kinda cute... lol
WafflesandFruitloops
hahahahahahahaha!!! puppy-sized tardigrades running around in The Doctor's Time And Relative Demension In Space machine!!!!!!!
NerdMonkey42
Kind of cute? Water bears are the king of cute! And so, so, so small. They need to be bigger!
Bosco239
QI did it!

RecipeForDisasta
Space? Space! SPAAAAAAAAAAACE!
24nerdfighter
I went outside and dug up some tardigrade-filled moss. Now i have some adorable pets who i am running tests on. Very fun, and they are so cute!
divisionbell13
@24nerdfighter Lookout, I can hear PETA closing in.
RynRoseable
they should send them to the moon to see if they evolve further. That would take possibly thousands to millions of years but it would still be interesting.
sfgvrich
I thought you were a Christian?
KrikXela
So... is this like chalieissocoollike USA of science? Imagine Charlie McDonald creating a video like this, I think it would be basically the same...
Ayshafr
@KrikXela *McDonnell. And, well, not exactly, though he and Charlie are pretty good friends.
PEEJ012
calling for a Tardigrade t-shirt!
HaninatorForthewin
"...so they shortened it to TARDIS." O.O YES!!! YESS!!! I LOVE THIS PLANET!! ^_^
Mikej1592
Wow, ok, so I am going to move my bet from roaches being the last living thing on earth after humanity destroys itself to Tardigrades. :-)

Ha! I actually thought of water bears, and I didn't know they were called tardigrades.
TheDarklord0211
I don't get a word of what this man says, but its so damn interesting!
rebelfanatic93
hank you're on memebase omg!!!! well the science section atleast...
friso1990
For a long time I thought tardigrades are related to the TARDIS. Thank you Hank for educating me.
lukesmall1
Can we take Tardigrades and fire them in space at the fastest speed possible in all directions and see if we colonizing completely random planets with life?????
THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
cubesofspinach
I'm beyond happy that you did an episode about tardigrades.
superelmann
Fahrenheit? I thought this was a science channel?..
johntkucz
I am like a tardigrade at times (when I get into a messed up environemnt sorta)...also...what program do you use for editing??
johntkucz
These shows are great!! I really liked the binary star vid. top qual!
Lizologie
Thank you! I am now amazed by little moss suckers!
You reminded me so much of Charlie when you said, "they're actually kinda cute." :)
devioh99
I want a pet tardigrade...
MegaM7777
came for the TARDIS, stayed for the science...
GracieManonla
I learned about these a few years ago while I was on vacation. My science teacher doubted they exist so I did a report on them and was rewarded with 500 extra credit points. :)
ZiBlueProtractor
This is how the race of Time Lords started! They were Tardigrades that were left on a planet and exposed to the Time Vortex! It all starts now! Build more Tardises for our future masters!
JamesTKirk254
As Picard would say, "That was.............absolutely thrilling!"
TattooLydia
They were sent here by ancient aliens
Ghosthunt64
I got to Water Bear before he did...Thank you, Animal Planet!
Erde04
why not send some of them with the rover going to mars :/ seed the planet maybe in a few billion years we will have some neighbors :/
Doomsquirrels
As a scientist that works with extremophiles I feel somewhat obligated to point out that the definition provided here is incorrect (or at least inaccurate). Extremophiles do, in fact, care where they live, but their habitat would be considered inhospitable to most other organisms. The ability to survive extreme conditions does not make an organism an extremophile - it has to require, or at least grow optimally at, those conditions. It is right there in the name.
arelationshipal
I desperately tried to come up with something else in the time you allotted Hank, but I may have imagined an elephant in a high school...
AndrewDeLong
Hank: "Imagine the toughest animal on ea--"
Me (interrupts): Chuck Norris.
28335
thumbs up to Hank's beardness!
JT112358
soooo lol at the top comment!
R0flc0pter1000
Aaaaaaaaaand subbed :D
Awesome show !
papergirlthoughts
can you please start working in celsius... i swear no one understand fahrenheit!
AndrewDeLong
@papergirlthoughts Fahrenheit is easy to understand.
32° = Freezing (water)
212° = Boiling (water)
72° = Acceptable room temperature
40° = a bit chilly but livable
90° = hot enough to swim (and a right angle)
120° = more reason to swim or, if humid out, a reason to buy a kick ass AC unit
0° = Cold for most people, but fun for me
Anything <0° = holy shit stay inside and crank up the fire
Fahrenheit is easy to understand, when you live it every day.
diane8cupcake
I really thought this was about the Tardis.
IAmDanMan1
Hank: "Picture, in your mind, the toughest animal on Earth."
Me: "DUN DUN DUN DUN! HONEY BADGER!!"
rethinkOURreality
Whoa, that was really cool! Also going off what @mastergingernumber1 said, do tardigrades have any biological/evolutionary connection to any other species on Earth? If not, then that theory's possible.
ReallyNotAwesome
Looked at water bears in sixth grade. I had no idea they were so tough!
Cr1byn
Great show! But still using Fahrenheit?... come on America, catch up
Exayevie
2:25 is the best thing I have ever heard. Life=MADE
jordanleigh713
I want a moss piglet!
Jakathera
Thumbs up if you totally took a screen cap of the Tardegrade and now am using it as your desktop background! *crickets* ... ... Well I am! And I'm proud of it! XD
ayyKatx
toughest animal on earth: the honey badger.
Dickified
Not all suck moss, there are some carniverous species that supposidly pounce upon bacteria! And run after them "like the Tyranosaurus Rex"
PYates77
Thank you Extreme Animals (loved that show so much when I was little)! I knew the answer to this question! :D
TheButtonFairy
I got obsessed with tardigrades back when I was 9 or 10. None of my friends knew what they were, and when I explained they didn't understand how awesome they were. I was simply amazed by them. And now I hear everyone online talking about them and such and finally I can discuss their incredible abilities with everyone!
Dragonwing16
I have a friend who studies these creatures endlessly
Calgarylames
I still think a Honey Badger is tougher...
marc46o
Wait! ... Yes, my mind was blown, thanks Hank.
chemexplosions
Archea! One of the more interesting forms of prokaryote!
Noobsquadz
The claims in this video are not based on scientific fact, they are exaggerated for entertainment value.
Some Tardigrades, subject to extremes of environment in the laboratory will survive, but will shortly after die. They are non invincible and do not have super powers or brains.
Summer5able09
Cuteness and badassery over load!!!!!!!!!!
beatlemaniac729
How does one kill a tardigrade...?
Rizzler97
Did anyone else think of the Honey Badger?
TheAerieShow
Well Tardigrades in space reminded me of Pigs in space
YaraxH
If they decide to team up with the honey badger, the human race is screwed.
guylfe
Dun Dun Dun Dun - TARDIGRADES!
By the way - am I the only one who, from looking at the title, thought it would be a Dr Who post?
GONEmypurpleflapjack
So the thirteenth doctor will only eat moss?
RattusCorvus
I want some as pets. They are cute and interesting and they survive almost everything, so maybe even me.
matthewgilpincom

PatientxWhatsername
@gladrial89 We played the name game (Name, favorite something, favorite something) in my 11th grade English class, and one of the categories was favorite animal. I said Tardigrades and NO ONE had heard of them xD I felt pretty awesome.
Phlyrox
send some to mars. may be in a million years some may evolve into something.
MythologicalGames
I have a lab microscope... Where can I find these creatures... They don't look that small...
dolphin64575
@MythologicalGames Moss, apparently.
themanwhocan2kx
tardigrade dont give a f**K!

lol, there was a Tardis. Dr. Who referance :D
TheNewRedHoodie
"panspermia, a word that i'm not gonna make a joke about"
mastergingernumber1
If these little creatures are as amazing as you say, is it possible that they were actually from another planet and came here? You did say that they can withstand pressures at a level that would be pointless on this earth, so is it possible that they developed that feature on another planet and then made their way here? Just thinking out loud.
leonid1995
@mastergingernumber1 Watch the rest of the video. ^^
moderndancerr
hank- my teacher showed this to our biology class. I guess that means that youre just that awesome.
Msmusicvideomaniac
i want a pet tardigrade
1994punk
I love these little bastards :D
WeirdBlueOne
I never thought I would be jealous of a small little creature that lives on moss. But I am. Because it has been to space, and can survive in space.
oiyx10
absolutly love tardigrades
frozenheat90
I LOVE TARDIGRADES!!!!!
NicksPolitics
they could end up losing whatever "memory" they have (if any)
reidrules45

Do you like Doctor Who?
iHASanIDEA
Tardigrades, the sperm of space life.
centophobic
the tardigrades remind me of the human centipede....
hettyLOL
'we keep shoving these little tardigrades up into'- *le buffer*
WHERE!
choisant
so that's what they're called in English! In norwegian we call them tøffeldyr, or slipper animals. Idk why, but it sounds like something that would suck on moss.
ifthisisthelife
@choisant haha,i just thought it was funny that the german word was also pantoffeltierchen(slipper animal)
also: tardigrades and our slipper animals are not the same: these little guys are apperently calld Bjørnedyr in norwegian.
DFTBA :)
OMGChicks1
oh by the way, I pictured a honey badger in space, and then he went crazy from the UV rays and started singing show tunes. yeah it was hilarious.
OMGChicks1
it froze at 2:31, i suggest you try that.
LeeshajD
I pictured a honey badger in a vat of cold, congealed custard :S
Rixtm27
I do expect a song about tardigrades soon :D
TheGoldImperium
I pictured a lion on mars (He died).
lorenor89
@TheGoldImperium
I named him carl..
poor carl....
rockym93
Spare a thought for the poor Tardigrades on board the failed Russian Phobos-Grunt probe, which is about to re-enter the atmosphere and burn up into a four-thousand kilometre long streak of flaming debris...
Oh, who are we kidding, they'll probably be fine.
lolmymag
how much do you think it would take to get moss growing on mars?
Anthonyk312
Panspermia just wouldn't work between solar systems. Something like 2 pieces of matter from another star system have entered our solar system from the time of its creation. The chances of one of them containing life is so much smaller than life simply evolving on its own.
TTomni
@Anthonyk312 I had the same thought when I watched the video. And I'd like to ask is panspermia considering life coming from a different solar system or just hopping through planets in ours.
stoffthegreat
i really really like this show! great idea hank!
zoemonkim
yaaaay updated on my birthday! also hank tardigrades r like microscopic..... you kinda forgot to mention that
Helveticabun
My guess was either a honey badger in a vat of some sort of acid, or a water bear in space. I love how much I watch Animal Planet since I was a kid. Thanks Most X-Treme!!!
ElijiahT
"...interested in proving the panspermia hypothesis"
????
That's not how science works.
lolmymag
@ElijiahT wtf really? YOUR MOM ISN'T HOW SCIENCE WORKS
imamadmad1
Hehe TARDIS. Maybe the tardigrades are from Gallifrey :P
christybrinkly24
Oh my god, they are so cute! :D

You are the Best teacher, Mr. Green.

I feel really awesome because I tried to picture an extremophile.
granted, it was on a moon of Jupiter...but...extremophile.
Thank you Astrobiology classes. :)
izorizo
I keep reading "Tardigrade" as "TARDISgrade" and keep having to correct myself.

I was picturing a honey badger being attacked by honey badgers (:
WelllWhatCanISay
That is mind-boggling stuff right there.
brahitsemily
No honey badger?
Unanimous97
Y U NO MY SCIENCE TEACHER?!
MissJuniorMinty
this made me very happy.
natzau
Hey Hank. I'm loving the show. Is it at all possible to provide metric measurements? Sure, I can just google it but it would be nicer to not have to do that. :)
Sara595
i want a stuffed cartoon tardigrade, the little flash thing is so cute, do are the real tardigrade, but i want something a little bigger
yellowjellotime
This made me consider the other implications of panspermia... what if life on Earth is not originally from Earth? Instead of tardigrades from Earth reaching other planets, wouldn't it be just as likely that long ago a meteor carrying tardigrades crashed into Earth and became the origin of all life on Earth? Basically... there is a possibility that all earthly organisms descended from aliens.
animeangela227
lol, yea. i was thinking about hiney badgers!
FoilFaerie
I was picturing a honeybadger let loose in a zoo full of people.
totototocaca
So tardigrades are little honey badgers?
tangerinevivid
i freakin love tardigrades!! i took an invertebrate field course this past summer and we found some. most exciting day of my life! haha

You got this from QI didn't you?
mizukori250
Tardigrades dont give a damn
asdfqwerzxcv6
I pictured a honey badger in space... so close! (only the honey badger was killed of course :( )
Vergast
for a science show you use an awful lot of imperical mesurments instead of ya know....ones used in science...
kiddooo10
Hank, thank you for these videos. As weird as it sounds, the conversations that we have about what you've been talking about in these videos has basically saved my relationship with my dad.
TRDPaul
how did tardigrades evolve then?
Miers27
@TRDPaul WITH SCIENCE
stormfet
I thought of a honey badger too...
DarianLewis
I'm glad i wasn't the only only to think of the honey badger ....... i feel much less stupid now

clochettestarz
Won a point at a pubquizz last night thanks to the word "panspermia" and mainly thanks to you!
spastisity
Which came first: the Moss or the Tardigrade?
OddmentTweak
which isn't clever until they shortened it to...TARDIS......BOOYA.
plushalligator
if they didnt name it the tardigrade on purpose, that is the most coincendental name in history. dr who nerds who name important stuff FTW!!!
proud2bAZN234
i thought this video was about a new animal that was similar to the tardis x(
odetomidgetcheese
Awwwwwwww so cute! New favourite animal!!
CeeTheBrave
Awwh, I found a water bear once. In filtered sewage water.
4TheLoveofLauren
if panspermia hfkldsajsa whatev. is true that means there could be some seriously resilient aliens on different planets AND THEY CAN COME AND KILL US! well thats scary
penguinz002
It's Otto! From search for wondla!
purplejoj
He didn't say, "The toughest animal on EARTH", at first, so I was thinking of a Dalek.
cablecar10
Pretty damn cute.
MetricCaboose1
I could have sworn I saw the word TARDIS somewhere?!
ThatMadHatterKat
@MetricCaboose1 TARDIS= Abbreviation for Tardigrades in Space!

CatfishAlwaysDrink
you make convincing arguement, but honey badger don't give a crap.
ThingMaBobJimmy
funnily enough, I was thinking about an octopus in space. I have a strange mind. This is also the reason that I currently have a massive bump on the back of my head, because it made me fall off my chair, giggling my immature little head off.
Zero683
Dr. whooooooooooooooooo
Ditsch42
They really named it Tardis? They're all nerds after all :D Awesome!
danininja94
Honey Badgers do care.
The tardigrade was cute!

DasNoehrchen
'and then they brought the tardigrades back to earth and they were like: "what's up?"'
n'awwwwww
DrQuijano
So it turns out that tardigrades are the most evolved species after all...
snakesmyle
I don't know if you read all the comments, but I have a question! Have scientists tested the ability of tardigrades to survive plummeting through the atmosphere? From what I've heard, meteorites and stuff tend to burn up when they enter our atmosphere (due to friction?). How does our atmosphere compare to the atmospheres of other planets, and does that information affect the panspermia hypothesis?
alcoholicshoe
@snakesmyle temperatures as cold as -273 degrees celsius, and as warm as 151 degrees celsius
Artifying
I love that I already knew about them. -3 Nerdy and proud.

@Artifying me too!

Best SciShow yet? Yes!

One of my university professors works with tardigrades, and whenever he's transporting them across borders and asked if he's carrying any living animal with him, he always answers with "umm, well, they could be dead, or alive... it depends".
WoWTirrus
So cool!!

I bet the person or people who made up the name "Tardigrade" watch and love Doctor Who.
itsciwi
Easily the most mind blowing episode of SciShow.
Thanks Hank!

you are talking science, use fucking kelvin degrees!
itsciwi
@enrybono
I agree, use Kelvin (or also give Celsius as well ass Fahrenheit), but when talking about kelvin, you dont say degrees.
enrybono
@itsciwi yup my bad
